Londen (Engels: London) is de hoofdstad en grootste stad van zowel Engeland als het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

In de regio Groot-Londen, waarvan de begrenzing tegenwoordig vaak gelijk wordt gesteld aan die van de stad Londen, wonen ongeveer 7,5 miljoen mensen. Hiermee is Londen de stad met de meeste inwoners van de Europese Unie. De hele metropoolregio strekt zich evenwel nog ver uit buiten de grenzen van Groot-Londen. De grenzen hiervan zijn niet gemakkelijk aan te geven, maar gedacht moet worden aan een gebied van ongeveer 8000 km²[bron?] met 12 tot 14 miljoen inwoners.

De stad is, naast de hoofd- en grootste stad van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, ook het politieke, economische en culturele centrum van dat land. Ook in Europa en de wereld vervult ze een belangrijke functie op diverse gebieden: Londen wordt als een van de vier traditionele alfa-wereldsteden beschouwd, samen met Parijs, Tokio en New York City.

Londen bevat vier plaatsen die op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de UNESCO staan: de Tower of London, de historische nederzetting van Greenwich, de Kew Gardens, en een gezamenlijke inschrijving bestaande uit het Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey en Saint Margaret’s Church.

Amsterdam is de grootste stad en (titulaire) hoofdstad van Nederland. De stad, in het Amsterdams ook wel Mokum genoemd, ligt in de provincie Noord-Holland, aan de monding van de Amstel en aan het IJ.

Amsterdam geldt naast de titulaire ook wel als de culturele hoofdstad van Nederland, met de meeste nationale musea (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum), de grootste orkesten (Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest), toneel- en operagezelschappen en ook met de meeste muziek- en theatergebouwen en de meeste kunstgalerieën en bioscopen. Ook de horeca is de grootste van Nederland, mede door het omvangrijke internationale toerisme naar de stad.

Op 31 mei 2009 telde de gemeente Amsterdam 761.395 inwoners[1], het hoogste aantal sinds 1976. De grootstedelijke agglomeratie telt ongeveer 1 miljoen inwoners[2] en is daarmee de grootste agglomeratie in Nederland qua inwoneraantal. De gehele stedelijke regio (Metropoolregio Amsterdam), waartoe onder andere Almere, Het Gooi, Haarlem en Purmerend worden gerekend, heeft ongeveer 2,2 miljoen inwoners. Amsterdam is verder één van de steden in de Randstad. De stad is bestuurlijk onderverdeeld in veertien stadsdelen die weer zijn onderverdeeld in buurten en wijken.

De multiculturaliteit van Amsterdam kan worden onderstreept met het feit dat op 1 januari 2007 de stad 175 verschillende nationaliteiten telde.[3] Daarmee voert Amsterdam de mondiale ranglijst aan.[4] In april 2009 waren er 177 nationaliteiten.

Paris (prononcé [pa?i] Prononciation du titre dans sa version originale) est la ville la plus peuplée et la capitale de la France, chef-lieu de la région Île-de-France et unique commune-département du pays. Elle se situe sur une boucle de la Seine, au centre du Bassin parisien, entre les confluents de la Marne et de la Seine en amont, et de l’Oise et de la Seine en aval. Ses habitants s’appellent les Parisiens.

The city proper has a population of about 1,300,000, while the urban area is the fifth largest in the European Union with an estimated population of 4,300,000.[2] The Milan metropolitan area, by far the largest in Italy, is estimated by the OECD to have a population of 7,400,000.

The city was founded under the name of Mediolanum by the Insubres, a Celtic people. It was later captured by the Romans in 222 BC, and the city became very successful under the Roman Empire. Later Milan was ruled by the Visconti, the Sforza, the Spanish in the 1500s and the Austrians in the 1700s. In 1796, Milan was conquered by Napoleon I and he made it the capital of his Kingdom of Italy in 1805.[4][5] During the Romantic period, Milan was a major cultural centre in Europe, attracting several artists, composers and important literary figures. Later, during World War II, the city was badly affected by Allied bombings, and after German occupation in 1943, Milan became the main hub of the Italian resistance.[4] Despite this, Milan saw a post-war economic growth, attracting thousands of immigrants from Southern Italy and abroad.[4]

An international and cosmopolitan city, 13.9% of Milan’s population is from abroad.[6] The city remains one of Europe’s main transportational and industrial hubs, and Milan is one of the EU’s most important centres for business and finance, with its economy (see economy of Milan) being the world’s 26th richest by purchasing power,[8] having a GDP of $115 billion. The Milan metropolitan area has Europe’s 4th highest GDP: € 241.2 billion (US$ 312.3 billion) in 2004. Milan also has one of Italy’s highest GDPs (per capita), about €35,137 (US$ 52,263), which is 161.6% of the EU average GDP per capita.[9] In addition to this, Milan is the world’s 11th most expensive city for expatriate employees.[10] Milan has also been classified as being the 28th most powerful and influential city in the world.

Milan is recognised as a world fashion and design capital, with a major global influence in commerce, industry, music, sport, literature, art and media, making it one of GaWC’s major Alpha world cities.[12] The Lombard metropolis is especially famous for its fashion houses and shops (such as along Via Montenapoleone) and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo (reputed to be the world’s oldest shopping mall). The city has a rich cultural heritage and legacy, and has a unique cuisine (it is home to numerous famous dishes, such as the Panettone Christmas cake and the risotto alla Milanese). A major settlement for two millennia, its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium.[6] London’s core, the ancient City of London, the ’square mile’ financial district, retains its mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name “London” has also referred to the metropolis developed around it.[7] Today, the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region[8] and the Greater London administrative area,[9][note 1] with its own elected mayor and assembly.[10]

Rome, is the capital of Italy and the country’s largest and most populated municipality (central area), with over 2.7 million residents in 1,285.3 km2 (496.3 sq mi). While the population of the urban area was estimated by Eurostat to have been 3.46 million in 2004,[2] the metropolitan area of Rome was estimated by OECD to have had a population of 3.7 million no later than 2006.[3]

The city of Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river within the Lazio region of Italy. It has been one of history’s most powerful and important cities,[4] being the home of the emperor during the Roman Empire and the modern seat of the Italian government. Rome’s history spans over two and a half thousand years. During the Middle-Ages, Rome was home to popes such as Alexander VI and Leo X, who transformed the city into one of the major centres of the Italian Renaissance, along with Florence.[7] The current-day version of St Peter’s Basilica was built and the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling was painted by artist Michelangelo. Famous artists and architects, such as Bramante, Leonardo da Vinci, Bernini and Raphael resided for some time in Rome, contributing to its Renaissance and Baroque architecture. As a modern city, it has been capital of the unified Italy since 1870, and grew mainly in two periods before and after World War II. Rome has had an immense historic influence to the world and modern society over the ages, particularly during ancient times, mainly in subjects such as architecture, art, culture, politics, literature, law, philosophy and religion.[8][9][10]

Modern Rome is a bustling and cosmopolitan metropolis, and is Italy’s administrative, cultural and political capital. Currently, and since the 1957 Treaty of Rome, the metropolis serves as one of Europe’s major political centres, with worldwide organizations such as World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),[16] International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the NATO Defence College being headquartered in the city. Rome is regarded as being one of the nation’s principle centres of business, media and finance, along with Milan. The Rome metropolitan area has a GDP of €109.4 billion (US$ 149.14), and according to a 2008 study, the city is the world’s 35th richest city by purchasing power, with a GDP of €94.376 billion (US$ 121.5 billion),[17] and is the world’s 18th most expensive city (in 2009).[18]

The city hosted the 1960 Olympic Games, with great success,[19] and is also an official candidate for the 2020 Olympic Games.[20]

Rome is the third-most-visited tourist destination in the European Union,[21] and its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.[22] Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are amongst the world’s 50 most visited tourist destinations (the Vatican Museums receiving 4.2 million tourists and the Colosseum receiving 4 million tourists every year).[23]

Walt Disney World Resort is the largest and most visited recreational resort in the world, containing four theme parks, two water parks, 24 themed hotels, and numerous shopping, dining, entertainment and recreation venues. Owned and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts segment of The Walt Disney Company, it is located southwest of Orlando, Florida. The property is often abbreviated Walt Disney World, Disney World or WDW.

It opened on October 1, 1971, with the Magic Kingdom theme park, and has since added Epcot (on October 1, 1982), Disney’s Hollywood Studios (on May 1, 1989), and Disney’s Animal Kingdom (on April 22, 1998).

Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Spanish: “Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico” — literally Associated Free State of Puerto Rico), is a self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico (Spanish for “rich port”) is composed of an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. The main island of Puerto Rico is the smallest by land area and second smallest by population among the four Greater Antilles, which also include Cuba, Hispaniola, and Jamaica.

Puerto Ricans often call the island Borinquen, from Borikén, its indigenous Taíno name.[4][5] The terms boricua and borincano derive from Borikén and Borinquen respectively, and are commonly used to identify someone of Puerto Rican heritage. The island is also popularly known as “La Isla del Encanto”, which translated means “The Island of Enchantment.”
